• You Can’t Simply Avoid These Summer Pet Care Tips

    Summer is just about to happen and you are no doubt looking forward to vacation and wonderful days in the sun. You want to spend a little more time with your pets and they will no doubt appreciate the attention. As a pet owner you need to be paying very close attention to your little buddy’s well-being during the hot months. Animals can’t tell you their problems and you have to be very observant. There are a few overall tips you should remember when it comes to taking care of your pet during the summer months.

Animals have trouble regulating their body temperature, but they do give some noticeable clues about being overheated. Excessive panting is a telltale sign of an animal being overheated.

    • Be Careful about Exercise. Your pet can be worn out very quickly with a lot of exercise in the noonday sun. If you have a daily exercise regimen for your dog or cat, which is not a bad idea by the way, schedule it for early in the day or in the evening when temperatures are much cooler. If the thermometer shows a temperature of over 90°F it is time to have the animal indoors, preferably in air-conditioned rooms.

    • Water is Cooling Exercise. Dogs in particular enjoy a splash of water. Having a small wading pool in the backyard is a way to let your pet cool off on a hot day. Water sprinklers also are a lot of fun and give your pet the opportunity to stay cool and still romp around.

    • Keep the Weather in Mind When Traveling. Pavement on the sidewalk heats up on hot days. Your dog or cat can get very serious burns from traveling on that concrete. Always see to it that your animal is able to walk on grass alongside you when making those short trips. One of the greatest dangers in the summer for an animal is being left in a car. It is better to leave the animal at home then have a situation where they are stuck in an overheated environment.

    • Keep a Sharp Lookout for Fleas. Summer is a time when fleas and ticks proliferate. If your animal is outdoors most of time always be sure to check the coat for evidence of any ticks. A good flea powder also is going to help.

    • The Animal Needs to Stay Close to You on Vacations. The pet is part of the family and many people wouldn’t think of going on vacation without having that little buddy come along. There is nothing wrong with that but you should keep your pet physically close to you. New surroundings can be very confusing and your pet might get lost. Having a long leash allows your pet to move around without being out of sight.

    • Loud Noises Can Be Very Upsetting. The Fourth of July and other fireworks displays can upset an animal because the loud noise. It is instinctive in many animals to run away from loud noises such as firecrackers and that is a good reason for keeping your pet at home if you go to a Fourth of July celebration.

    It is possible that your pet may show signs of not being well due to dehydration or perhaps insect bite. This is not time to allow things to slip by. You should see a veterinarian if there’s any signs of your pet being sick. You can imagine how difficult it is when you are sick during the summer; it is much worse for an animal. Make sure summer starts at all the vaccinations have been done and this may be a good time to schedule a physical checkup.

    You can enjoy the summer time with your pet if you just take the time to look out for their health and safety. Animals enjoy the attention of masters give them and you a great time with your pet in these warm months. You do have to be observant, though. Never assume that everything is going to be just fine. You have to do some due diligence to make sure your pet is safe and secure during summer.
